At night, in the mill, I tell myself stories of my son. I am always ready to move back to him. Once, I say, once Sonny was walking into the barn and he caught me singing with the radio. We stood at opposite ends of the center aisle, the song between us. Sonny paused, and then he sang with me, moving along the stanchions with the water hose. A man’s voice and a boy’s voice, the afternoon sun slanting across the aisle, Sonny in the light and then the shadow. I want to remember the song, but I cannot. He resides. Our song, awkward and uncertain, the yellow light across his strong young body. For this moment in this forgiving mill, he is alive to me, a brief visit.
